WHAT IS A CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER ?

A Clinical Social Worker is a mental health professional with advanced graduate training  in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of emotional, mental and behavioral disorders in individuals, families and groups.

Delaware law regulates the practice of Clinical Social Work. The professional title "LCSW" indicates completion of a Master's or Doctorate degree in Social Work with internship, clinical supervision, a national examination, annual professional continuing education, and adherence to a specific Code of Ethics.

WHAT DO CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKERS DO?

     They provide psychotherapy and counseling.

They provide services in independent practices as well as services to schools, courts, hospitals, agencies, and industry.  It is estimated that Clinical Social Workers provide up to 60% of the mental health services in this country.

They conduct workshops on many issues related to mental health and everyday living to a variety of community groups.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THERAPY?

The professional relationship between you and a Clinical Social Worker is strictly confidential.  It promotes growth, change and increased understanding. A Clinical Social Worker asks questions to help prioritize the problems that concern you. Together you will develop specific goals and objectives that form the basis of a treatment plan.

The focus of Clinical Social Work is on helping assist people in their problems with everyday living.

WHAT IS THE COST?

Insurance often covers the services of a Clinical Social Worker.  Contact your benefit plan for both confirmation of coverage for mental health services and details regarding using your benefit.

In addition and instead of insurance reimbursements, many Clinical Social Workers will see you for a fee which you and they will discuss and agree upon at the beginning of your therapy experience.

MENTAL HEALTH CARE NOW PREVENTS FUTURE HEALTH PROBLEMS

National statistics show that when people seek assistance for their emotional or mental health problems, their incidence of certain other medical problems is reduced.  In fact, costs for medical services for those who have sought mental health help are reduced by up to 30%
